Fresh food is easier to use when it is still fresh when you need it. A few simple storage habits can help produce last longer, reduce waste, and make weekday meals easier.

1. Wash most produce when you are ready to use it

Extra moisture can speed up spoilage for some fruits and vegetables. Unless something is especially dirty, store it dry and rinse it before eating or cooking.

2. Give leafy greens a little breathing room

Wrap greens loosely with a clean paper towel or cloth and keep them in a container or bag that is not packed too tightly. The goal is to control excess moisture without crushing the leaves.

3. Keep apples and bananas away from produce that ripens quickly

Some fruits release ethylene gas as they ripen. Storing them separately can help other produce stay usable longer.

4. Prep only what helps you use it

If chopping carrots or washing berries makes you more likely to eat them, prepare a small amount for the next couple of days instead of processing everything at once.

5. Have a “use first” spot

Keep produce that needs attention soon in one visible place in the refrigerator. Build snacks, soups, salads, smoothies, or simple meals around that food first.

Horizon tip: Before shopping, check what you already have. The most affordable ingredient is often the one already in your kitchen.
